Efforts of Local Developer Showcased at Golden Age of Summerville Festival
SUMMERVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, April 14, 2008 – Summerville, South Carolina is a town steeped in rich history, incredible architecture and magical pines. All of these will be celebrated at the third annual Golden Age of Summerville Festival held April 25th through the 27th. The festival’s new name and this year’s theme "Summerville’s Architectural Heritage" recognizes the rich history of the town with its procession of distinctly American styles, from Greek Revival to present day. Interestingly, the opening presentation for the festival doesn’t focus on the town’s more than 700 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Instead, its topic is something new; a community that celebrates the rebirth of what was cherished from the past, Daniel’s Orchard at Historic Summerville.
With respect for the land and the surrounding community, The Sintra Development Corporation acquired the property located just a half mile off Main Street on Highway 78 and embarked on a more than two year effort of uncovering the history and architecture of the Town of Summerville. The architectural firm of Bill Allison and R. Wayne Ramsey was commissioned to study the buildings and homes in Summerville and to return to Sintra with their findings in order to create plans for a neighborhood that would blend seamlessly with the existing architecture and town.
Allison Ramsey Architects returned to Sintra with a comprehensive study of Summerville’s homes and buildings. The study identified ten historic home archetypes – six cottages and four houses. It also examined outbuildings, today typically used as garages. Commercial structures in the town were also observed. For each building, the shape and size was considered as well as the materials used. Every detail was noticed right down to the light fixtures, fencing and roof materials. With this information in hand Sintra set about establishing the architectural guidelines for the 152 unique homes and 60 town homes that would become Daniel’s Orchard.
Around this same time, the team at Sintra Development Corporation was working diligently to create the parks, sidewalks and streetscapes at Daniel’s Orchard. Streets were designed so new homes would face existing residences. Access to the community’s five parks was made easy with sidewalks on both sides of the streets. The neighborhood’s center park would be sizable and feature a bandstand and swings to relax on – all reminiscent of other parks and gathering places in the town. Attention was paid to every detail right down to the “Pride of Summerville” azaleas blooming throughout the community.
No longer just a dream, this carefully planned neighborhood is becoming reality. Ten town homes and five single family homes have already been constructed and three of the parks are also complete.
Visitors to Daniel’s Orchard will see details of an era when craftsmen were patient and careful with their trades and the homes they built. Residences built by Sintra Homes at Daniel’s Orchard feature beautiful crown molding, colonial baseboards and wainscoting. Wide plank hard wood floors, mahogany doors, fireplaces (both indoors and out) and lots of windows create places that feel like home. Quality construction means these homes will be around as long as their historic counterparts.
We invite everyone to come see what makes Daniel’s Orchard at Historic Summerville so different. Take in the views from the second story wrap around porches. Enjoy the flowers in the courtyards or play a game of catch in one of the parks. We guarantee you’ll want to call it home.
Hear how it all began at the opening ceremony of the Golden Age of Summerville Festival, Friday April 25th at 6:30 pm at Kings Inn Bed and Breakfast. The event is expected to raise awareness of Historic Downtown Summerville, encouraging day visits and overnight guests. Information on the festival and complete schedule of events is available at www.goldenageofsummerville.com.

| Sintra Homes Wins Gold in BIA Home Building Awards |
Oct 10, 2006 |
Sintra Homes, builders of award winning communities such as Hamlin Plantation, has brought home the gold medal in the Brick Industry Associations 2006 "Brick in Homebuilding Awards". The homebuilder won top honors for its custom Bedon’s Alley home in downtown Charleston.

The home, a dramatic five story, six bedroom, five bath residence on Bedon’s Alley, is primarily constructed of hand made brick with exquisite details including corbels, band details, varying bonds of brickwork, parapet, pilasters and water tables. Its architecture is specifically unique because it is one of the few homes downtown to have a fully dried in basement.
"The Sintra home on Bedon’s Alley is one-of-a-kind and truly deserving of this award," said John McDonald, executive vice president of Sintra Homes. "Our team of craftsmen worked diligently to construct this masterpiece, which is representative of Sintra's spectacular custom projects throughout the greater Charleston region."
The brickwork on Bedon's Alley is truly amazing, but the interior of the residence is equal to the exterior. It boasts custom milled Spanish cedar doors and windows, a five story self-supporting spiral staircase, Appalachian black walnut floors, marble bathrooms, walnut library, theater room, custom kitchen and limestone flooring in the basement. The residence is topped off with a beautiful copper roof and its inhabitants will enjoy the intimate walled garden.
"We are honored to be awarded this distinction in a national competition," said Jeffrey
B. Coggin, president of The SIM Group. "It complements Sintra Homes tradition of building excellent homes and considering every detail in construction."
A panel of architects and landscape architects from around the country independently reviewed and scored each of the entries. Winners hailed from across North America, truly reinforcing the national status of the award. Sintra Homes received the distinction of the Gold award based on their score totaling in the top percentage of the single-family, custom home category.
Bedon's Alley, along with other Sintra Homes can be viewed at the company's new website, WWW.SINTRAHOMES.COM. The website, launched earlier this month, provides visitors with a portfolio of custom homes in the Charleston region that Sintra has recently constructed. In addition, one-of-a-kind custom homes, ranging in price up to $3.8 million, are also previewed on the site.
